For the roots of perfume, Egyptians were accountable. In everything from religious rituals to funeral arrangements and even everyday wear, they have used scents. Egyptian society's wealthy elites, male and female alike, would embellish themselves with lily-like aromas to signify their rank. The use of perfume as a symbol of political status was taken over by the Persians, but it was not until the Greeks and Romans became familiar with it that it started to be regarded as an artistic work and created on masse and in continuous quality.

Slowly, perfumes spread across the world, and for a while, fragrances were primarily limited for use in religious services.
